This example of dense topography represents jungle terrain, appropriate for Lizardmen, Serpent People, and any other ancient forgotten civilizations that might appear. Lemuria, perhaps? The Lost City of Opar would be cool. Maybe I need to start getting some giant ape figures.
The base map for this terrain is another really cool printed fabric from Spoonflower that I bought online. You can get swatches to test colors for relatively cheap. I had it printed on "Cypress Cotton Canvas" (one of their fabric options); when the bolt arrived, I cut it to size and sewed double-fold bias tape to the edge to stop it from fraying.
Here's how it looks, cut to size and edged with bias tape and then some terrain on it (below).
As with the Underground Caverns, the terrain pieces are cotton duckcloth (light canvas, essentially) painted lightly using watercolor techniques. I might want to decorate them further -- they look a little plain -- but I haven't had any good brainstorms on how yet.
Having a good groundcloth is lovely, but the second most important thing is some nice jungl-ey scatter terrain to really make it feel, well, like a jungle.
These are palm trees; you can get them through cake decoration pathways and base them yourself or buy them through several retailers who sell them based up.
I've got lots, but for this I need lots more, so I'm going to look into the cake decoration pathway since I want to fill the map with palm trees.
This image illustrates why I need a bit more detail in the green groundcloth "open spaces" -- it looks a bit like a lake, not an open area. That's not what I'm looking for.
With Dense Topography you are required to put out a central open passageway that occupies most of the central 1/3 of the map.
Here's what it looks like with lots of scatter palmtrees, and a camp at the end. Love it.
Sadly, it only looks this good because I used every single palm tree I had in the image shown -- creative trimming of the picture avoids revealing that there aren't any palm trees on the rest of the map at this point. How many thousand palm trees do I need? More than I have now, at any rate...
Terrain with some of the Lizardman Army arrayed as well. Really looks nice.
If you look in the jungle in this image, you can see a bunch of other botany beyond just palm trees. There are a half-dozen other types of things. All converted from plastic plants for aquarium use.
