The Dark Ages is a period where Central and Eastern Europe changed from being dominated by Germanic Tribes to being dominated by the Slavs. This was not a case of the Slav tribes pushing the Germanics out; rather the Germanic tribal migrations that moved the Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Lombards, Gepids, Vandals, and others both East (for the Ostrogoths originally) and West (for all of them, with the Ostrogoths being the last) seem to have been an overlay across a Slavic tribal population that grew and became dominant from Northern Greece to Bohemia and the southern Baltic after the Germanic tribes left for greener (more Roman) pastures.
This army, with a few appropriate extra stands, can serve for any of the following six armies in Triumph:
Early Slav. First century of release from Germanic rulership (476-579 AD). Massed Light Foot with a significant chunk of Skirmishers or Bow Levy, and up to nine stands of Rabble
Slav or Wend. 580 - 1218 AD. Also massed Light Foot with possible Skirm/Bow Levy and possible Rabble, but with up to two stands of JavCav (noble horsemen). After 830 they could have up to four stands of Heavy Foot (fighting in close order). Possible Viking Raiders from the 9th through mid 11th centuries; possible stand of Danish or North German mercenary knights from the mid 11th century onward.
Western Slav. This basically covers what later became Bohemia, from 803 AD to its conquest by Poland in 1003. Massed heavy foot instead of massed Light Foot, otherwise similar to Slav or Wend above.
As a less accurate (more sketchy) morph, it is possible to use this army for Prussians or Estonians fighting in the 13th century against Germans, Danes, and the Teutonic Order. I'm not sure I'd do that morph myself -- I would want to have more fur and stuff, perhaps. I'm not sure. But most of this Slav Morph's Light Foot would be fine as Warband for both those armies, and the Javelin Cavalry of the Slavs would be fine for those of the Prussians. The much later date (1200s) is not really a problem because the primitive state of the Prussians and Estonians did not have any more advanced armor than the Slavs in the 8th century.
Slavs often used rectangular wooden shields.
Various figure manufacturers mixed to create maximum variety. I see Gladiator, Essex, Outpost, and other figures from a wide variety of ranges all intermixed. Shield designs are hand painted.
After 579 AD the Slavs could have some effective cavalry, fighting as JavCav. All of these figures are Essex. The blue shield guy comes from their Slavic cavalry range (HSA 10). The guy with the fur cap on the same stand is a Hun figure (HU7). The red and white shield bareheaded guy is from one of the Dark Ages ranges. Not sure where the last guy comes from -- maybe a command figure from an Eastern European Mounted Command range? Essex, regardless.
I decided to have my Slav Heavy Foot using more rectangular shields. A few of these shields are custom made, added to Essex or other figures. Figures are from Rus, Slav, and other Essex ranges.
Slav Bow Levy, in all their glory. Mostly Essex figures from various Dark Ages ranges.
